A little about peanuts

Peanuts are heat-loving crops, so it is common in subtropical latitudes. The birthplace of the plant is South America. From there, peanuts were brought to the West Indies, and afterwards became widespread in Europe.

The largest peanut plantations can be found in South America. There, nature created the most favorable conditions for the comfortable growth of this plant. Recently, however, gardeners are increasingly growing crops in temperate latitudes.

Peanuts belong to the legume family, but unlike other crops, its fruits form and grow underground. An annual plant forms a small bush with branched stems. Its leaves are paranoid, small flowers with a yellow color.

Features of growing peanuts

Peanuts, like other legumes, are easy to grow. But if the air temperature drops below + 15 ° C, plant growth stops. Therefore, in cool weather, peanuts should be covered with a film.

Landing can be done as soon as the temperature of the soil exceeds + 15 ° C. To increase crop productivity, the seeds are planted in glasses to a depth of 3-4 cm in April (pre-soaked), and then transplanted into open ground.

Planting pattern - 50-60 cm. Between rows, 15-20 cm - between plants in a row.

Peanuts have one peculiarity: it blooms one day. In the early morning, the flowers bloom, and in the evening hours wither.

Therefore, peanut flowers should be pollinated per day. Typically, the plant blooms in late June. At the end of pollination, peanut ovaries burrow into the ground, where future fruits ripen.

After lowering the stalk into the ground, the bushes need to be spudded, like potatoes.

When peanuts begin to bloom and during its flowering period, the plant needs to be watered. After flowering ceases, watering should be done only with prolonged droughts.

The first peanut sunrises need to be protected from attack by birds. Birds can completely destroy peanut plantings.

Classic peanut care: the plant needs to be weeded, watered and fed.

During the growing season, gardeners do not encounter problems with plant diseases. When the peanuts begin to dry, the leaves and stalk turn yellow, which means that nuts can be dug up and harvested.

We usually collect peanuts in the second half of September. They dig it out, gently shake the ground, and place it in a dry place. Next, the plant is dried along with a bush. After 10 days, the fruits can be separated in peanuts.

Valuable properties of peanuts

Peanuts are valuable nutritious foods. It contains sugar, carbohydrates, protein in large quantities, high-quality fats and vitamins and minerals necessary for the human body.

Not so long ago, a study was conducted in the United States that showed that peanuts contain a large amount of antioxidants that prevent the development of heart and vascular diseases. The use of peanuts is the prevention of the development of atherosclerosis, malignant tumors and the delay of premature aging. And also its fruits contain vitamins E, B and linoleic acid, which has an antisclerotic effect.

For peanuts, it is better to select sunny places with fertile soil. Southern culture enriches the land and gives health to the owners of the site. Try growing peanuts in your garden and, be sure to share your experience with us in the comments on the article or on our Forum.
