5 My Favorite Varieties and Hybrids of Zucchini Zucchini
I love zucchini for its high productivity, unpretentiousness and high taste. And every year I surely plant several bushes of zucchini in the garden. Empirically established for myself several varieties of favorites. Since for me not only taste but also the appearance of vegetables is very important, all the varieties I have chosen are painted in different colors. What varieties and hybrids of bush zucchini-zucchini I liked the most, and why they became my favorites, I will tell in this article.
What is the difference between zucchini and ordinary zucchini?
If you ask any gardener about the differences between zucchini and zucchini, we will most likely hear that zucchini is just a bush zucchini. And this fact is completely true.
However, this difference is far from the only one. Moreover, there are some hybrids of bush squash, in the description of which there is no indication that the cultivar belongs to zucchini. So, what other differences do zucchini and zucchini have?
In appearance, zucchini is very easy to distinguish on a bed, they have not only compact bushes with short internodes, but also characteristic more carved foliage with thin blades. Many varieties also have expressive silver-gray mosaic patterns on the leaf blade. Inexperienced gardeners often take them for symptoms of a disease, such as powdery mildew. However, this feature was developed by the plant as a result of evolution - a similar technique helps the leaf to cool during intense heat.
Classic zucchini most often has a greenish or grayish-white color. In zucchini, we most often find a wide variety of colors. These are dark green, almost black fruits, and bright yellow, and light green. In addition, they are often covered with small dots and have different stripes.
The peel of a zucchini is more delicate than that of ordinary zucchini, and remains so for a long time, so it can not be removed from young fruits. The inner part of the fruits differs in these cultures. If the zucchini often has voids in the middle and the seeds harden quickly, then the zucchini seeds remain dairy for a very long time and do not require removal.
The zucchini pulp is slightly different in taste from the pulp of a classic zucchini. It is more elastic, sweetish and does not have the characteristic obsessive taste characteristic of zucchini. Therefore, green zucchini is more readily eaten unripe. In particular, there are many salad recipes, where one of the ingredients is a young raw zucchini.
Although the skin of young zucchini is more tender, as it ripens, it also becomes coarser, which protects the delicate pulp from spoilage. Therefore, the ripe fruits of this plant can be stored for several months. It was noted that, in comparison with other zucchini, zucchini have a slightly greater keeping quality.
In general, zucchini itself is a rather precocious culture, especially in comparison with their closest relative, the “winter” pumpkin. But most varieties and hybrids of zucchini are real champions in terms of ripening and ripen faster than classic zucchini.
The high productivity of zucchini is also pleasing, since most of their flowers are female and give an ovary. According to some reports, zucchini yields are 2-4 times higher than ordinary zucchini with white color.
And finally, the last difference, which is again the advantage of zucchini over ordinary zucchini, is higher resistance to diseases of pumpkin crops and resistance to adverse weather conditions.
1. Zucchini-zucchini "Yasmin F1"
Zucchini-zucchini “Yasmin F1” - the sunniest and most tender, my favorite zucchini of all varieties having an elongated shape. Its bright yellow-orange color is a real sun in the garden!
The fruits of this vegetable marrow are very noticeable and visible at a distance, making them easy to collect. They have a narrow cylindrical shape and smooth peel without bulges. In the length of the fruit can reach 25 centimeters, in diameter 4-5 centimeters, an average weight of 500 grams.
One of the main differences between the hybrid and other yellow-fruited cultivars is its high leveling, among them there are very few bent fruits. Ripening period is medium early (35-38 days from germination to the start of harvesting the first fruits in technical ripeness). Productivity is high - from 4 to 10 kilograms per square meter.
The flesh is cream-colored, very tender, elastic, sweetish, great in taste. The bushes are compact, medium power, semi-open type. For full growth, one bush will require an area equal to 1 m2. Zucchini “Yasmin F1” shows a very high field resistance to diseases such as yellow zucchini mosaic and leaf watermelon mosaic, which increases the overall yield of plants.
The only drawback that can be noted at the Yasmin F1 zucchini is its hybrid origin, so you have to buy new seeds every year.
2. Zucchini-zucchini “Cavili F1”
Zucchini-zucchini “Cavili F1” - guaranteed harvest. This hybrid has been heard by gardeners for more than one season. Having heard about him, I also decided to test him in the beds.
One of the many advantages of the hybrid is that this zucchini is parthenocarpic. That is, he does not need insects for pollination and fruit setting. This feature allows the ovaries to form even in adverse weather, when it is difficult for bees and other insects to pollinate.
The fruits of Cavili F1 have a classic cylindrical shape and light green color. These zucchini are resistant to overgrowth. Their light green flesh remains tender, supple and juicy for a long time, even when the fruit reaches significant maturity and has a length of about 40 centimeters. Almost all fruits are uniform and straight, their length is 15-20 centimeters. Resistance to diseases, especially powdery mildew, in the zucchini "Cavili F1" is high.
The taste and appearance of this zucchini, in my opinion, are not particularly remarkable, but for me the Zavili F1 zucchini is a kind of safety net. Not even in the most successful - rainy and cool - summer, thanks to this hybrid, we will definitely be with zucchini.
3. Zucchini-zucchini "Como F1"
Zucchini-zucchini "Como F1" - stable and transportable. This hybrid is a valuable novelty among zucchini zucchini. Its fruits have a bright green emerald color with a glossy sheen, a cylindrical shape, weight up to 500 grams. The pulp is light green and dense, the taste is pleasant, sweetish.
Due to the increased elasticity of the fruits, they are resistant to damage during harvesting, are also easily transported and can be stored for a long time. The bush is compact but fast growing. An open-type habitus, which simplifies harvesting - all fruits are in full view in the center of the bush.
The most important advantage of this vegetable marrow is a very high adaptability of plants. This determines the good fruit setting even under adverse conditions, as well as their further ripening. This viable zucchini is resistant to a number of diseases characteristic of zucchini: yellow zucchini mosaic virus, watermelon leaf mosaic virus, papaya ring spot virus, cucumber mosaic virus and powdery mildew.
Such resistance ensures the release of a large number of marketable fruits, so the Como F1 zucchini is very much appreciated among farmers. Early ripening allows it to be used for both summer and spring production cycles. But ordinary summer residents also, for sure, will appreciate this unpretentious early ripe hybrid.
The only drawback is that this new zucchini is still hard to find in retail, and I got the seeds from a friend of the farmer. But I am sure that soon the seeds of this zucchini-zucchini will be widely distributed in retail.
4. Zucchini-zucchini “Tiger”
Zucchini-zucchini “Tiger” - to the delight of children. A relatively new variety of Russian selection. Medium early - from seedlings to the first harvest takes an average of 50-60 days. The fruits are smooth and quite large - from 800 grams to 1.2 kilograms. The flesh is cream-colored, elastic, with a delicate taste, high in vitamins and nutrients.
Bushes are powerful, open type. Zucchini cylindrical, slightly curved, long, but have a small diameter. These zucchini have a rather pronounced ribbing. The main tone of the bark is dark green, but on the ribs the color becomes light green with strong fine spotting. A similar feature makes this variety striped.
Children really like these elegant striped zucchini. One can easily imagine what it is: tiger cubs, snake, dragon or crocodile; and make appropriate crafts from motley fruits. Ease of care also allows children to be introduced to the cultivation of this zucchini-zucchini.
“Tiger cub” is quite resistant to diseases and is characterized by increased drought tolerance due to strongly dissected lobed leaves.
5. Zucchini-zucchini "Black Beauty"
Zucchini Zucchini Black Beauty - A proven classic for fresh consumption and fruit freezing. Classic zucchini, bred in the United States in the 1920s, still does not lose its relevance in many parts of the world.
These are large bush plants of open type, which facilitates harvesting. Glossy dark green fruits ripen on the bushes, almost black with dense creamy white flesh. Foma of the fetus is elongated and slightly ribbed. These zucchini have a delicate, pleasant taste.
Plants are distinguished by very high productivity, it is noted from the very beginning of fruiting and remains at a high level for a long period. It is best to eat fruits when they reach a length of 20 centimeters. Zucchini "Black Beauty" is also considered the best variety for freezing.
Ripening periods are average, usually after the emergence of seedlings it takes 40-60 days until the fruits are ready for harvest. The variety is quite resistant to powdery mildew.
There is also a very similar variety on sale with a similar name. "Black handsome". This zucchini is listed in the State Register for the Central and Central Black Earth Region. These varieties not only have a similar name (if you translate the name "Black Beauty" into Russian), but they are also very similar in appearance. Therefore, you can grow both one and the other variety.
I was impressed by the Black Beauty zucchini zucchini for its rich color and strong glossy luster of the peel, and their creamy flesh also looks very appetizing. When grown, this variety does not cause any particular problems.
